Pittsburgh grocery store battles heat up as Wegmans signals arrival in Western Pa.

Rochester, New York-based Wegmans Food Market is said to be in “active” negotiations for a spot in the 100-acre Cranberry Springs development that houses the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, according to real estate sources.

It would mark Wegmans’ first foray into southwestern Pennsylvania, a market that has been dominated by Giant Eagle for decades. The chain has 19 stores throughout Pennsylvania, including two in Erie and one in State College.
